Bibliotherapy Capacity Building: Changemaker In Progress

Bandung, March 15, 2025 – “Every great change begins with a deep understanding of oneself and the surrounding environment.” This principle served as the foundation for the Bibliotherapy Capacity Building: Changemaker in Progress, organized by UNIKOM Language Center. This event is part of the Community Connection Program, a social initiative involving UNIKOM’s English Literature Program in an effort to develop individual capacity through bibliotherapy.

Bibliotherapy is a method of self-reflection conducted through reading and discussing literary works. Within the Changemaker in Progress framework, this method is designed to help participants recognize and manage emotions, enhance active listening skills, and strengthen teamwork.

During the event’s opening, Dr. Tatan Tawami, S.S., M.Hum., Head of the English Literature Program at UNIKOM, emphasized that an individual’s capacity to understand and interpret literature plays a significant role in driving social change. He expressed his hope that this activity would inspire students to continue developing themselves and contributing to society.

“Bibliotherapy Capacity Building is not just a training program but a step toward self-transformation. Literature teaches us to be more attuned to the world, and from there, change begins,” he stated.

Similarly, Dr. Retno Purwani Sari, S.S., M.Hum., Head of the UNIKOM Language Center, highlighted that this activity aims to shape reflective and communicative leaders. “Change does not only stem from great ideas but also from self-awareness and adaptability. Literature serves as a powerful medium to foster empathy, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of various perspectives,” she explained.

Held at the Miracle Auditorium UNIKOM, the event began with a presentation by Nenden Rikma, S.S., M.Hum., Program Manager of the UNIKOM Language Center and workshop facilitator. In this session, participants were introduced to the concept of bibliotherapy and how to use it as a tool for personal growth.

The session continued with reflective reading exercises, where participants were encouraged to delve deeper into texts and relate them to their personal experiences. This was followed by group discussions, aimed at uncovering the meaning behind the texts and finding their relevance in real life.

Beyond bibliotherapy, participants also engaged in a team-building activity, designed to enhance teamwork and creativity. Led by Nenden Rikma, S.S., M.Hum., the session emphasized the importance of solidarity and effective communication within a group setting.

One participant shared, “This event truly opened my eyes to how literacy is not just about reading but also about understanding people and the world around us. Through discussions and reflective exercises, I feel more prepared to become a true changemaker.”

The event concluded with a group photo session, symbolizing the participants’ commitment to carrying the spirit of change into their lives.

Through programs like this, UNIKOM continues to strengthen its role in shaping students who are not only academically excellent but also socially conscious and equipped with deep critical thinking skills.

📌 May the Bibliotherapy Capacity Building initiative flourish and continue to create meaningful and positive changes for countless lives!
