Fostering Excellent Character through Character Building Training (CBT): A Collaboration between UNIKOM’s English Department and Rindam III Siliwangi Bandung

The English Department at UNIKOM has successfully implemented a character-building training (CBT) event attended by 94 students from the 2020, 2021, and 2022 cohorts. This event occurred on Saturday and Sunday, October 21-22, 2023, at Rindam III Siliwangi, 4 Menado Street, Bandung.

The primary goal of this training program is to equip students with knowledge and insights that will become integral to character formation and strengthen their potential and motivation. Students are encouraged to explore their strengths, values, and unique potential while enhancing their practical communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

In this program, three lecturers from the English Department at UNIKOM, led by Asih Prihandini, S.S., M.Hum., including Dr. Juanda and Mia Rahmawati Yuwita, S.Hum., M.App.Ling. actively participated in supervising and guiding the students. The event commenced with an opening and the symbolic presentation of a Ribbon-Pinning Ceremony by the Rindam officials to two representative students from UNIKOM’s English Department, symbolizing the start of their journey in this program.

During this two-day, one-night training, students received various materials, including national insights, Marching and Drilling Training (PBB), Civil Ceremony Procedures (TUS), and other motivational activities. This program was facilitated by mentors from Rindam III Siliwangi, including Letda Inf Dodi Purnawan, Peltu (K) Retno S. R., Serma Andriana Mulyadin, Serma Wendi Pradana, Serda Deri Ferwanda, Serda Guntur N.S., and Serda Asep Yadi. All activities held over these two days were carried out within the area of Rindam III, both indoors and outdoors, including the Mundinglaya Hall, the Dodikjur Field, and the Mosque within the Rindam III area.

In addition to formal activities, students also engaged in informal activities such as guidance and counseling sessions (Bimsuh), campfires, and camaraderie activities to strengthen cooperation, a sense of friendship, and mutual care for one another. Students had to clean up after themselves to ensure the area remained clean and ready for use. This was intended to instill a sense of responsibility, discipline, and tolerance in the students’ community life.

The final activity was the closing ceremony, marked by the Ribbon-Unpinning Ceremony as a symbol of the training program’s conclusion. During this session, Dr. Juanda, as a representative of the UNIKOM organizing committee, imparted a message to the students, encouraging them not to cease applying discipline, teamwork, and effective communication upon their return to campus and their daily lives.

This training program has demonstrated the strong commitment of the English Language Studies Program at UNIKOM to shaping and preparing future leaders who will contribute to society. As the students return to their academic pursuits, the experiences, knowledge, and skills acquired from the Character-Building Training at Rindam III Siliwangi, Bandung, will continue to influence their personal and professional development.
