Bandung, UNIKOM — In its ongoing efforts to create a conducive, humanistic, and transformative academic environment, the English Literature Program at the University of Computer Science Indonesia (UNIKOM) held an Introduction to Capacity Building workshop for faculty members on Wednesday, June 4, 2025. The event featured experienced speakers, including Mahruf Wahono, Mrs. Turwelis (Certified SMM Coach & BNSP Certified Public Speaker), and Mr. Asep, who have extensive experience in human resource development in education.
The session focused on enhancing faculty members’ capacity to address generational challenges and create a more empathetic and relevant learning environment aligned with students’ current needs. One key topic discussed was how to bridge the generational gap in the learning process—particularly regarding communication styles, learning methods, behavior, and mindset between faculty and students.

The presenters emphasized the importance of adopting a more personal and exploratory approach in lecturer-student interactions. Lecturers were encouraged not only to act as instructors but also as thinking partners for students. This was achieved through active dialogue, the use of exploratory questions that foster empathy, and efforts to position students as active participants in shaping the learning process.
“Questioning techniques are not merely teaching tools, but a fundamental skill that can unlock the deepest potential of students,” said Mrs. Turwelis. This approach is expected to strengthen the emotional and academic bond between faculty and students, ultimately improving the quality of learning in the classroom.
The session also emphasized that the goals of lecturers, both as educators and learning facilitators, must be the foundation for every action taken. With clear and internalized goals, lecturers will be able to create a more meaningful and inspiring classroom environment.
This activity is part of a series of faculty capacity-building programs initiated by the English Literature Program at UNIKOM in collaboration with the UNIKOM Language Center to align teaching strategies with the characteristics of today’s student generation. The Program Coordinator, Dr. Tatan Tawami, S.S., M.Hum., stated that improving the academic atmosphere must begin with strengthening faculty members’ capacities as facilitators, communicators, and inspirers in the classroom.
“Empathic collaboration and exploratory communication are the keys to unlocking students’ potential. This is the academic environment we aim to continue building at the English Literature Program at UNIKOM,” he emphasized.
Through such activities, it is hoped that the English Literature Program at UNIKOM will not only enhance faculty members’ academic performance but also strengthen the relationship between faculty and students in the spirit of partnership and meaningful learning.
